I recently learned that if young children do not pick up interests in STEM and STEAM fields by 8th grade, they are likely to never pick up the skills or interests. As many of you know, I have a teenage daughter. That’s why episode 21 of This Green Planet is about empowering young girls in STEAM.
In this episode of This Green Planet, I’m sharing the importance of STEM and STEAM in middle school girls and actionable steps you can take right now to help a young girl you know get involved in STEM and STEAM. Some of the talking points I go over in this episode include:
- What kids are interested in before 8th grade is a huge facilitating factor in future career intentions
- Women have unique skill sets that men may not have to benefit these fields
- Normalizing mistakes can help young girls feel more secure in being interested in STEM and STEAM fields
- Storytelling matters; You can use storytime to share inspiring stories with both young girls and boys about women STEMists
Purchase my new book, Lessons From Inspirational Women STEM Leaders at Green Planet Press.
Be sure to tune in to all the episodes to receive tons of practical tips on sustainable, STEM business practices and to hear even more about the points outlined above.
